Should I choose UVA or Georgetown for DC internships?

Georgetown has the clear edge for DC internships, especially if you want to intern during the school year in politics, policy, government, or adjacent fields. Being in Washington means internships are built into the rhythm of the semester, and Georgetown students can realistically commute to Capitol Hill, federal agencies, think tanks, embassies, nonprofits, and media organizations without needing special housing or a leave from campus. That convenience matters a lot because many policy internships are part-time and designed for students who can be in the city during the week.

Location is the biggest differentiator. At UVA, DC opportunities are absolutely available, and the school has a strong alumni network in government, consulting, law, and public service, but Charlottesville is far enough away that semester internships in DC are much less seamless. In practice, UVA students often access DC through summers, specific semester programs, or concentrated networking trips rather than treating the city as an everyday extension of campus.

Georgetown also benefits from a campus culture that is unusually tied to public affairs. Students are surrounded by classmates pursuing Hill internships, policy research, campaign work, foreign service interests, and issue advocacy, so the pipeline is highly visible and easy to plug into early. That kind of environment can make it easier to hear about openings quickly, meet speakers and employers in person, and build experience step by step starting freshman or sophomore year.

UVA still brings real strengths. Its reputation is excellent, especially in public policy, law-oriented paths, and government-related recruiting, and the alumni base in DC is substantial. But for the specific question of making internship experience easier during the academic year, Georgetown’s location and day-to-day access are hard to beat.
