Imperial College London vs University of British Columbia: which has better student life?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Imperial offers life in the middle of London with endless things to do, but UBC offers a much more traditional campus community where student life is built into daily routines. Imperial is highly academic and relatively specialized, with many students saying the social scene takes more effort to build because people are busy and the campus feels more urban than self-contained. UBC tends to feel more connected as a student environment because it has a large residential campus, more of a classic college atmosphere, and easier day-to-day community through housing, clubs, and campus traditions.

For making friends, UBC usually has the edge. A lot of students live on or near campus, the setting is more self-contained, and it is easier to keep running into the same people in residences, student spaces, and campus events. Imperial absolutely has clubs, societies, and an active student union, but the rhythm is different. Students are spread across London, many have demanding schedules, and social life often depends more on joining specific groups rather than just absorbing a campus vibe.

For things to do outside class, both are strong, just in different ways. Imperial gives you London, which means concerts, museums, neighborhoods, internships, food, and nightlife are on another level. UBC has Vancouver plus immediate access to beaches, trails, and outdoor activities, and its own campus is lively enough that you do not always need to leave to find something happening.

For feeling connected on campus, UBC is usually easier to imagine as an everyday student home. Imperial can feel exciting and ambitious, but also more independent and less cohesive unless you actively create your circle. If student life is a major factor, UBC is the one I would lean toward for the stronger overall sense of community, while Imperial is more appealing for students who want an intense academic environment embedded in a major global city.
