Santa Clara vs University of San Diego for finance careers: which is better for recruiting and internships?
I’m trying to decide between Santa Clara University and the University of San Diego, and I want to focus on finance. I’m mostly interested in how each school helps students get finance internships, networking opportunities, and full-time jobs after graduation.
I know both are good schools, but I’m not sure which one has the stronger reputation or better access to finance recruiting.

Santa Clara has the clearer edge for finance recruiting and internships. Its biggest advantage is location in Silicon Valley, which gives students easier access to internships during the school year, stronger proximity to corporate finance roles at tech companies, and a denser alumni presence in the Bay Area. For a student who wants frequent exposure to employers while in college, that matters a lot.
The internship pipeline is the most practical difference. At Santa Clara, students can realistically target part-time or in-semester opportunities with nearby firms, startups, venture-related organizations, and finance teams inside major tech companies. USD students can absolutely land strong internships too, but San Diego is not as deep a finance market as the Bay Area, especially for breadth of recruiting across corporate finance, fintech, investment-related roles, and larger employer networks.
Networking also tends to favor Santa Clara because of geography and alumni concentration. Being close to San Jose, San Francisco, and Peninsula employers makes it easier to attend info sessions, coffee chats, alumni events, and interviews without needing to travel much. That convenience often translates into more repetitions, more contacts, and more chances to build momentum early.
For full-time outcomes, Santa Clara is often better positioned for students aiming at corporate finance, financial analyst roles, fintech, accounting-to-finance pathways, and jobs tied to the tech ecosystem. USD has a solid business reputation and can work well for students who want to build a career in Southern California, but for finance recruiting specifically, Santa Clara usually offers broader access and a more active nearby employer base.
