Auburn vs. Maryland for accounting: which is better for career placement and recruiting?
I’m a high school senior trying to choose between Auburn and Maryland, and I’m leaning toward accounting. Both schools seem solid overall, but I want to know which one gives accounting students a stronger path into internships, job placement, and recruiting.
I’m especially interested in which school has the better reputation with employers and makes it easier to get into a good accounting career after graduation.

Maryland has the edge for accounting career placement and recruiting, mainly because of location and employer access. Being near Washington, DC puts students closer to Big Four offices, federal agencies, consulting firms, and large corporate employers, and the Smith School is very well known in that regional recruiting market. For internships during the school year, Maryland tends to offer more practical access simply because so many employers are nearby.
That location advantage matters a lot in accounting. Recruiters from public accounting, government audit, advisory, and finance-related employers regularly hire in the DC, Baltimore, and Northern Virginia corridor, and Maryland students can tap that network without needing to rely as heavily on summer-only opportunities. If you are interested in accounting paths tied to federal work, regulatory agencies, internal audit, or firms serving government clients, Maryland is especially well positioned.
Auburn is still a very credible accounting option, and its accounting program has a strong reputation, especially across the Southeast. It places well with regional offices of major accounting firms and has a loyal alumni network, particularly in Alabama, Georgia, and nearby markets. If you want to build your career in the Southeast, Auburn can be a very effective launch point and may feel more plugged into that region’s employer base.
The bigger difference is recruiting reach and convenience. Maryland tends to make it easier to connect with a wider mix of employers across public accounting, corporate roles, and government-adjacent work, while Auburn’s placement strength is more regionally concentrated.
