UC Santa Cruz vs Arizona State for internships: which school gives better access and support?

The biggest practical tradeoff is proximity to employers versus the structure and scale of career support. UC Santa Cruz has an advantage in location for tech and startup internships because it sits near Silicon Valley and has access to the broader Bay Area network. Arizona State tends to offer a larger, more built-out career ecosystem on campus, with very active employer recruiting, extensive career services, and a strong culture of internships across many majors.

For pure access to nearby companies, UC Santa Cruz has a real edge, especially for students interested in software, data, biotech, game development, and other fields tied to Northern California’s tech economy. Being close to San Jose and within reach of the Bay Area can make part-time internships during the school year more realistic.

ASU, though, is often easier in terms of process and volume. It has a very large employer network, frequent recruiting events, and a career infrastructure that feels highly systematized. Students in business, engineering, journalism, health, public service, and many other fields often benefit from the school’s scale, alumni base, and strong ties to the Phoenix metro area.

Support-wise, I would give ASU the edge. It is known for being very career-forward and practical, and many students find it easier to plug into internships early because the school puts so many employer connections and career resources in front of them. UCSC absolutely can lead to excellent internships, but students sometimes need to be more self-directed and proactive in turning regional access into actual opportunities.
