Baylor vs Indiana for accounting: which is the better college choice?

I’m trying to decide between Baylor and Indiana as a high school senior who wants to study accounting. Both schools seem strong in different ways, and I’m having trouble figuring out which one would be the better fit for an accounting major.

I’m mainly looking for the better overall choice for someone planning to major in accounting and start a career in the field.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Indiana tends to offer broader national recruiting reach and a larger business-school ecosystem, while Baylor often provides a smaller, more personal environment with strong support and a values-driven campus culture. For accounting specifically, Indiana’s Kelley School of Business has a very visible reputation with employers and a deep alumni network. Baylor’s Hankamer School of Business is well regarded too, especially in Texas, and some students prefer its class atmosphere and campus feel.

If your main goal is maximizing accounting recruiting options, Indiana usually has the edge. Kelley is one of the most established undergraduate business schools in the country, and that matters for internships, employer access, student organizations, and peer networks. For a student who wants exposure to public accounting firms, corporate roles, and a wide range of business pathways, Indiana often gives you a larger platform.

Baylor becomes more compelling if you know you want a tighter-knit campus and may build your career in Texas or the Southwest. Its accounting program is respected, and Baylor students often talk about strong faculty access, advising, and a campus community that feels more personal than a very large public university. That can make a real difference if you learn best in a more relationship-driven setting.

Cost should matter a lot here too. If Baylor gave you significant merit aid and Indiana would be much more expensive, that can narrow the gap quickly, especially in accounting where CPA progress, internships, and grades matter more than paying a premium for the school name alone. But if cost is similar, Indiana is the stronger pick for accounting because of Kelley’s scale, recruiting strength, and overall business reputation.

So the answer is Indiana in most head-to-head situations for accounting, with Baylor making the most sense when the financial package is clearly better or when you strongly prefer its smaller, more structured campus environment.
