Michigan State or Arizona State: which is better for social life?

Arizona State has the edge for social life if you want the most constantly active, off-campus-heavy scene. ASU benefits from being in Tempe, where campus blends into a busy college-town area with restaurants, apartments, bars, concerts, and nightlife all packed close together. The warm weather also matters more than people expect, since it keeps people out and about for most of the school year.

That said, Michigan State has a very strong social scene too, just with a different feel. MSU’s culture is more centered on a classic Big Ten campus experience: tailgates, school spirit, house parties, student neighborhoods, and a tighter sense that a huge share of students are all living the same campus life together in East Lansing. If social life for you means football weekends and a traditional college atmosphere, MSU is especially appealing.

ASU stands out because the social options are broader and more spread across different types of students. With Tempe, nearby Phoenix, internships, downtown events, and a large mix of commuters and residential students, there is almost always something happening beyond just campus parties. That can make ASU feel more flexible and energetic, especially if you like variety and don’t want your social life tied mainly to campus traditions.

MSU feels more unified, which some students actually prefer. It is easier to picture one shared student culture there, while ASU can feel a little more diffuse because of its scale and the broader metro setting.
