Is University of Houston or Texas State better for computer science?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location versus campus environment: University of Houston puts you in a major urban job market with easier access to internships during the school year, while Texas State offers a more traditional college setting in San Marcos but with less immediate proximity to large tech employers. For computer science specifically, that Houston location matters because being near a large metro area can make networking, part-time technical work, and employer events more accessible. Texas State can still lead to good outcomes, especially with Austin not too far away, but the day-to-day recruiting advantage is usually stronger at UH.

On program strength, UH is typically viewed as the more established and career-oriented option for CS. Its connections to Houston industries, including energy, healthcare, logistics, and growing tech roles, can be useful if you want applied experience and a broader local employer base.

For internship opportunities, UH has the clearer edge simply because you are already in one of the largest job markets in Texas. Being able to intern without relocating during the semester can matter a lot in CS, where experience often drives job outcomes. Texas State students can absolutely pursue Austin internships, but it may require more travel, planning, or summer-only timing.

In terms of preparation, both schools can get you to software engineering or other tech jobs if you build projects, interview well, and seek internships early. But if the question is which school gives a CS student the stronger built-in career platform, UH usually comes out ahead. Texas State becomes more compelling if cost is meaningfully lower or if you know you would do much better personally in its campus setting.
