Is Arizona State or San Jose State more commuter friendly for undergrads?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus location: Arizona State has a much larger university infrastructure with lots of commuter students across its campuses, while San Jose State sits in a denser downtown setting where transit access is stronger but day-to-day commuting can be shaped by Bay Area traffic and parking constraints. For a student who wants to drive in, ASU is often easier to manage because commuting is built into the way many students attend. For a student who expects to rely on trains, buses, or light rail, San Jose State has a real advantage because it is embedded in downtown San Jose near public transportation.

ASU, especially the Tempe campus, is very used to students arriving from the surrounding Phoenix metro area. The university operates at a scale where commuting is normal, and the region’s car-centered layout means driving is often the default. That said, the Phoenix area is spread out, so commute times can get long depending on where you live, and the heat makes walking or biking less appealing for part of the year.

San Jose State is also highly commuter-oriented, but in a different way. It has long served many local students who live at home, and its downtown location makes it more practical for students coming by Caltrain connections, VTA light rail, or buses. The challenge is that driving and parking in San Jose can feel tighter and more expensive than in the Phoenix area, even if the campus itself is easier to reach without a car.

If your plan is mostly driving from home, Arizona State is probably the more convenient overall setup. If you want the most public-transit-friendly option, San Jose State is the easier school to attend without living on campus.
