Arizona State University vs. Villanova for accounting: which is the better choice?
I’m trying to choose between Arizona State and Villanova for accounting, and I’m stuck because both seem like solid options. I want to understand which school makes more sense for an accounting major in terms of classes, recruiting, and setting me up for internships and a first job.
I’m a high school senior trying to make a decision before I commit, and I’m mainly comparing the overall value of each school for this major.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and recruiting geography: Arizona State offers a very large business ecosystem with broad employer access and lots of accounting-specific infrastructure, while Villanova gives you a smaller, more personal undergraduate environment with especially strong ties into the Northeast job market. For accounting, both can work well, but they do not create the same day-to-day experience or the same regional pull after graduation. If you want the widest menu of classes, student orgs, and large-firm recruiting activity, ASU has an edge; if you want tighter faculty access and a more intimate campus culture, Villanova is appealing.
ASU’s W. P. Carey School is especially well known for business and has the kind of size that usually translates into more accounting electives, more specialized resources, and a bigger on-campus employer presence. That matters in accounting because recruiting often starts early, and a school with a large pipeline to public accounting firms can make internships easier to access. Phoenix is also a real advantage, since being in a major metro area helps with internship availability during the school year as well as in the summer.
Villanova’s business school is respected, and for students targeting Philadelphia, New York, or the broader Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, its alumni network can be very useful. The accounting path there can feel more hands-on simply because the undergraduate population is smaller and it may be easier to build closer relationships with professors and recruiters. For some students, that smaller setting makes a real difference in getting recommendations, leadership roles, and personalized career guidance.
On value, ASU often comes out ahead if your cost is meaningfully lower, especially for a major like accounting where CPA readiness, internships, and recruiting matter more than prestige alone. Villanova can still be worth it if the price is comparable for you and you know you want its campus environment and East Coast placement network. Between the two, I would lean ASU for accounting unless Villanova is close in cost and you specifically want to start your career in the Northeast.
