Arizona State vs Penn State for accounting: which is better?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Penn State tends to carry a bit more national brand weight with employers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, while Arizona State is especially well connected in the Southwest and has a very large, career-oriented business ecosystem. For accounting specifically, both can absolutely get you to the Big Four and other major firms, but the recruiting geography and alumni footprint are meaningfully different. If you already know where you want to work after graduation, that can matter almost as much as the classroom experience.

Penn State’s Smeal College of Business is very well regarded, and its accounting path has a strong reputation with firms that regularly recruit there. The alumni network is one of the school’s biggest assets, and that can be especially helpful for internships, early recruiting, and landing interviews in established East Coast markets. Penn State also has the traditional residential college experience that many students want, which can make networking and campus involvement feel cohesive.

Arizona State’s W. P. Carey School of Business is also highly respected and is known for scale, employer engagement, and practical career preparation. ASU often stands out for the sheer number of business-related opportunities, industry partnerships, and access to a major metro area through Phoenix. That location can be a real advantage for internships during the school year, and W. P. Carey has built a strong reputation with recruiters across business fields, including accounting.

If the question is which is more broadly seen as stronger for accounting, I’d give a slight edge to Penn State in overall traditional reputation for accounting and business recruiting. If cost is better at ASU, or you want to build your career in Arizona, California, Texas, or the broader Southwest, ASU can be just as smart a choice in practice. Between the two, Penn State has the narrower reputation edge, but ASU is close enough that price, region, and campus environment should probably decide it.
