Is Indiana University or the University of San Diego worth it for undergrad?

Indiana University is usually the better value for undergrad, especially if cost matters in a serious way. IU has broader academic depth, a much larger alumni network, and especially strong name recognition in areas like business through the Kelley School. It also tends to offer the classic big-campus college experience with more student organizations, school spirit, and course options across majors.

One major differentiator is scale and reach. IU Bloomington is a flagship public university, so its alumni base is huge and spread across many industries and cities, which can matter for internships and job connections. If you are considering business, media, public affairs, music, or a field where campus resources and specialized programs matter, IU often gives you more built-in opportunities.

Another factor is what you are paying for. USD is a private university with a smaller, more intimate environment and a very appealing location in San Diego, but a lot of its value comes from lifestyle, smaller classes, and personal attention rather than sheer breadth of resources. That can absolutely be worth it for some students, but only if the price is reasonably close to IU or if you know you want that smaller campus feel.

The San Diego location is a real advantage, particularly for students interested in staying in Southern California or building connections there. USD can feel more personal and less overwhelming, and some students thrive in that setting. But when people ask about “worth it” in a cost-versus-opportunity sense, IU usually comes out ahead unless USD gave you significantly better financial aid or you strongly prefer a smaller Catholic private-school environment.
