Which is better for finance, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or UT Austin?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both of these schools are on it. I want to study finance and eventually recruit for internships and a first job in the field.

Since both universities are strong overall, I’m mainly wondering which one tends to be the better choice for finance students.

The biggest practical tradeoff is geography and recruiting reach: UT Austin has especially strong access to Texas finance recruiting and benefits from being tied to a major business hub, while UIUC gives you a large, well-regarded business program with broad Midwest placement and a very strong alumni network. For finance specifically, UT’s McCombs School of Business usually has the sharper edge in front-office recruiting visibility, especially for investment banking, corporate finance, and roles centered in Texas. UIUC is absolutely credible for finance, but it is a bit more dependent on how aggressively you network and which market you are targeting.

UT Austin’s advantage is that McCombs is one of the more recognizable undergraduate business brands in the country, and employers know how to recruit there. Austin itself is a growing financial and corporate center, and UT students also have pathways into Houston, Dallas, and other large Texas markets. That combination tends to make recruiting more direct, especially for students who want structured on-campus access and strong regional momentum.

UIUC still has real strengths. Gies College of Business is respected, the school is huge, and the alumni base is extensive, especially across Chicago and the Midwest. For students interested in corporate finance, accounting-related paths, financial analysis, or Chicago-area opportunities, UIUC can work very well. It is not a weak option at all, but for the most competitive finance tracks, students often need to be more intentional about clubs, networking, and early recruiting preparation.

If the question is strictly which school tends to be better for finance outcomes, I would give the nod to UT Austin. McCombs has the stronger finance reputation on balance and often offers a clearer recruiting pipeline. UIUC is still a strong choice, especially if cost, location, or personal fit comes out better there.
