Rutgers or NYU for city life: which feels more urban as a student?

NYU feels much more urban in everyday student life. Its campus is woven directly into Manhattan around Washington Square Park, so your walk to class, grabbing food, studying in a cafe, internships, and weekend plans all happen inside the city rather than beside it. At Rutgers New Brunswick, you get a college-town environment spread across several campuses, with the city feeling more separate from the core student experience.

One big difference is the physical layout. NYU does not have the traditional enclosed campus feel, which means city streets, subway stations, apartment buildings, restaurants, and stores are part of your normal routine from day one. Rutgers has residence halls, student centers, buses between campuses, and a much more defined university infrastructure, so even though New Brunswick is urban in parts, student life still revolves around the school itself.

Another difference is how students spend unstructured time. At NYU, a lot of social life happens off campus by default: coffee shops, parks, concerts, internships, neighborhoods, and late-night food are built into daily life. At Rutgers, students often stay more within the university orbit, and going into New York or fully making use of nearby city options takes more planning.

The pace also feels different. NYU students are living in one of the busiest cities in the country, and that energy shapes everything from transportation to social life to work opportunities. Rutgers can still give you access to urban experiences, but it feels more like attending a large university in a city-adjacent setting than living inside a city every day.
