Is Loyola Marymount University or Boston University better value for money for undergraduates?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location-driven opportunity versus total cost pressure. Boston University tends to offer broader national recognition, deeper recruiting pipelines, and stronger access to internships during the school year because of its position in Boston, but it is also one of the more expensive undergraduate experiences in the country. Loyola Marymount can be costly too, yet for many students it feels like a more contained and personalized experience, with smaller-scale access to professors and strong Los Angeles connections, especially in media, business, and entertainment-related fields.

From a pure outcomes angle, BU usually has the edge. It has greater academic breadth, more established pre-professional infrastructure, and a larger employer network across fields like finance, health, communications, engineering, and public policy. That matters if you want flexibility or you are not fully sure of your major, because BU can open more doors across more industries.

LMU’s value is more dependent on what you study and what you pay. It can be a very solid investment for students who get meaningful merit aid or who want to build a career in Southern California, particularly in business, film and television, communications, or certain humanities and social science paths. Its campus culture and smaller feel can also translate into better access to mentorship, which is a real form of value for some students.

If both schools cost roughly the same, BU is usually the stronger value because the academic range and career network are wider. If LMU gives you substantially more aid, that changes the equation quickly, because the gap in opportunity is often not large enough to justify taking on much more debt for BU.
