UC Irvine is usually the stronger overall choice for most students, mainly because it has broader academic depth, a stronger research-university environment, and a lower cost for many California residents. It also tends to carry more weight nationally as a public research campus, especially in STEM, business economics, public health, and the sciences. Loyola Marymount is well regarded, but it is smaller, more expensive for many families, and better known for a more intimate private-school experience than for across-the-board academic strength.

One major difference is academic scale and opportunity. UC Irvine offers a much wider range of majors, research labs, large academic departments, and connections tied to a major UC campus.
