Is Loyola Marymount University or UC Santa Barbara better for business?
I’m trying to decide between Loyola Marymount and UC Santa Barbara for undergrad, and business is the main thing I want to study. I know both schools have different vibes and strengths, but I’m not sure which one is generally considered better for a business major and career opportunities afterward.

UC Santa Barbara has the edge overall if you want the stronger academic platform and broader public-university recruiting environment, but Loyola Marymount is often the more directly business-focused option for undergraduates because it actually has a dedicated business school. LMU’s College of Business Administration offers a more traditional undergraduate business experience, while UCSB does not have a standalone undergrad business major in the same way. That difference matters a lot if you want structured business coursework from the start.
At LMU, you can study in an established business setting with majors such as accounting, finance, management, and marketing, and the school’s Los Angeles location helps with internships during the academic year. Being in LA is a real practical advantage for business students, especially for entertainment business, consulting, marketing, real estate, and finance-adjacent roles. Alumni connections in Southern California are also a meaningful plus.
At UCSB, the main path is usually economics, economics and accounting, or related fields rather than a classic undergrad business program. UCSB is a very well-regarded UC campus with strong academics and a large employer presence, so it can still lead to excellent outcomes, especially if you are comfortable building a business path through economics, internships, campus clubs, and recruiting. For some students, that flexibility is a strength, but it is not the same as attending a school with a full undergraduate business curriculum.
If your priority is specifically studying business as a major and getting business-oriented preparation built into your classes, LMU is the cleaner choice. If you are equally happy studying economics and want the UC brand, broader campus scale, and strong overall reputation, UCSB can be the more compelling option.
