Is James Madison University or Boston University better for communications majors?

Boston University has the stronger overall edge for communications, especially if you are weighing academics, internships, and post-college career access in one package. BU’s College of Communication is a well-known, specialized school within the university, and being in Boston gives students direct access to media, PR, advertising, journalism, and corporate communications opportunities during the school year, not just in the summer.

The biggest academic difference is structure and specialization. At BU, communications students study in a college built specifically around fields like journalism, film and television, advertising, public relations, and media studies, which tends to create more industry-focused coursework and a denser network of faculty and peers in the same field. JMU has solid communication-related options and a strong undergraduate experience overall, but it is not as nationally prominent for communications in the same way BU is.

The internship piece also favors BU because of location. Boston is a major media and business city, so students can more realistically hold semester internships, part-time roles, or networking meetings without needing to leave campus for another region. JMU students can absolutely intern and build experience, but Harrisonburg does not offer the same concentration of communications-related employers right outside campus.

Career opportunities after graduation also lean toward BU because its communications programs are closely tied to industries where brand recognition, alumni connections, and urban professional access matter. JMU can still be an excellent choice if you want a more traditional campus environment and potentially lower cost, but on the specific question of communications strength and career pipeline, BU stands out more clearly.
