Is the University of Washington or CU Boulder harder to get into?

The University of Washington is generally harder to get into than CU Boulder, especially for out-of-state applicants and for high-demand majors. UW draws a very large applicant pool, has a more selective overall admissions process, and admission can be significantly tougher if you are aiming for programs like computer science, engineering, or business. CU Boulder is also a well-known public university, but its overall admissions process is typically less selective than UW’s.

One big difference is how competitive major choice can be at Washington. At UW, some of the most popular programs are capacity-constrained, so getting into the university does not always mean easy access to the major you want. That makes the practical level of selectivity feel even higher, especially for students targeting direct admission to sought-after fields.

Another factor is applicant demand and reputation in certain academic areas. UW, particularly in Seattle, attracts a huge number of applicants because of its location, research profile, and strong programs in tech-related and pre-professional fields. CU Boulder has strong academics too, especially in engineering and the sciences, but the admissions bar overall is usually not as tight.

Residency can also matter a lot. Public universities often have different standards and priorities for in-state and out-of-state applicants, and UW can be especially difficult for nonresidents.
