Chapman vs UC Berkeley for value: which one has better return on investment?
I’m trying to decide between Chapman and UC Berkeley and keep hearing people talk about “value” and return on investment. I know Berkeley has a much bigger name, but Chapman seems like it might offer a more personal experience.
I’m mainly trying to understand which school usually gives a better payoff in terms of career outcomes compared with the cost of attending.

For return on investment, UC Berkeley is the clearer winner for most students, especially if you are in-state. Berkeley combines a stronger national and international reputation, wider employer reach, and very strong outcomes in fields like engineering, business-adjacent careers, data, public policy, and research. Chapman can offer a more personal undergraduate experience, but it is usually harder to justify on pure value unless you receive significant merit aid or you are drawn to one of its standout niche programs.
Berkeley makes the most sense for students who want the broadest long-term career payoff from the degree itself. Its alumni network is enormous, recruiters know the name immediately, and the campus has deep connections to the Bay Area job market, startups, major firms, and graduate schools. That matters not just for first jobs, but for internships, research access, and mobility across industries over time.
Chapman is a better fit for a student who really wants smaller classes, more direct faculty contact, and a campus environment that feels more structured and less overwhelming. In some areas, especially film, television, media production, and certain communications paths, Chapman can be very compelling because location and industry ties in Southern California matter. But if Chapman costs much more than Berkeley, the ROI case gets tougher unless that program-specific advantage is central to your goals.
Cost is the key swing factor. If you are comparing in-state Berkeley to full-price Chapman, Berkeley is very hard to beat on value. If Chapman has given you major scholarships and Berkeley would require substantially more debt, then the comparison becomes closer, because ROI is about net cost, not just prestige.
