Is Penn State or the University of Rochester better for pre-med?

The University of Rochester has the edge for pre-med. Its biggest advantage is how tightly connected the undergraduate experience is to a major academic medical center: the University of Rochester Medical Center and Strong Memorial Hospital sit right there, so research, physician shadowing, clinical volunteering, and medically related student organizations are unusually accessible for undergrads.

Rochester also tends to make it easier to build close relationships with professors and advisors, which matters a lot for recommendation letters and sustained mentoring. Smaller class environments and a more undergraduate-focused advising feel can help when you need someone who knows your work well enough to support a medical school application in a detailed, credible way.

Another real differentiator is the academic structure. Rochester’s curriculum is known for being flexible, which can be helpful for pre-med students balancing biology, chemistry, physics, math, clinical activities, and research without feeling boxed in by a large set of general education requirements. That flexibility can make it easier to protect your GPA while still pursuing depth outside the sciences.

Penn State is absolutely a legitimate pre-med option, especially because of its scale. There are many labs, a large alumni network, and plenty of student organizations tied to health professions. But the size can make the path feel more self-directed, and getting individualized attention may take more initiative.

Location matters here too. Penn State’s main campus in State College is a classic college town, but it does not place you as directly in the middle of a major urban medical hub in the same way Rochester does. For pre-med, that day-to-day proximity to hospitals and patient-facing settings is one of the clearest practical advantages Rochester offers.
