Is Middlebury or Columbia better for internship access?

Columbia has the clear edge for internship access, especially during the school year. Its New York City location makes part-time, in-semester internships much more realistic, and students can tap into nearby finance, media, tech, nonprofits, research labs, startups, and major cultural institutions without needing to leave campus for a whole term.

The biggest practical difference is simple geography. At Columbia, it is much easier to take a subway to an interview, or keep an internship going while taking classes. That matters a lot because many opportunities come through timing, proximity, and being available for short-notice meetings or events.

Middlebury can still produce strong internship outcomes, but the process is usually more planned and less spontaneous. Because the campus is in a rural area, most internships are summer-based or tied to school-supported funding, alumni connections, or programs that help students leave campus for the opportunity. You are less likely to casually build an internship into your weekly schedule during fall or spring.

Another difference is the type of access you get. Columbia students are surrounded by employers who actively recruit in the city and often host events, panels, coffee chats, and short-term projects that can turn into internships. At Middlebury, support tends to be more high-touch and personal, which can be excellent for mentoring, but the opportunities themselves usually require more advance planning and travel.

For summer internships, both schools can help, but Columbia still has a practical advantage because many students can stay in New York and continue relationships they started during the academic year. Middlebury students often do well when they use alumni networks and funded programs strategically, but the school-year convenience is not really comparable.
