Is UC Santa Cruz or UC Davis better for internships?

UC Santa Cruz usually has the edge for internships, especially for students interested in tech, because of its proximity to Silicon Valley and the Bay Area employer network. Santa Cruz students can more realistically reach startups and larger tech companies during the school year, and that matters when you want part-time internships, research-to-industry connections, or quick access to recruiting events. UC Davis has strong career support too, but its location tends to make day-to-day access to major internship hubs less immediate.

Location is the biggest differentiator. From Santa Cruz, students are much closer to San Jose, Mountain View, Palo Alto, and other major employment centers, which makes it easier to interview, commute, or build connections during the academic year. That can be especially valuable in computer science, engineering, and some data-focused fields where nearby companies recruit repeatedly and often prefer students who can stay engaged beyond a single summer.

UC Davis stands out more for internships tied to agriculture, environmental science, veterinary and animal science, food science, and certain public-sector or health-related paths. Its relationships with state agencies, research labs, farms, hospitals, and regional employers can be very useful if your interests line up with those areas. In those fields, Davis may actually provide more targeted opportunities than Santa Cruz.

The practical difference is that Santa Cruz tends to offer broader access to private-sector internships in tech-adjacent industries, while Davis is often stronger when the internship pipeline depends on its specialized academic strengths and applied research ecosystem. If your main goal is maximizing employer access during college across common internship-heavy fields, Santa Cruz is the one I’d lean toward.
