Is UC Santa Cruz or UC Berkeley better for economics?

I’m trying to decide between UC Santa Cruz and UC Berkeley for studying economics. I know Berkeley has a strong reputation overall, but Santa Cruz seems like it could be a better fit for me personally.

I want to understand which school is generally stronger for an economics major in terms of academics, opportunities, and name recognition for internships or grad school.

UC Berkeley is the stronger choice for economics in terms of academics, recruiting access, and name recognition. Its economics department is one of the most established in the UC system, the course selection is broader and deeper, and Berkeley’s location and alumni network create more direct pipelines to internships, research, and graduate study.

On academics, Berkeley offers a more extensive economics ecosystem. You would usually find more upper-division options, more classmates aiming for finance, consulting, policy, and PhD paths, and more faculty visibility in the field. That matters because economics is a major where the strength of the department, the rigor of the curriculum, and access to advanced coursework can make a real difference, especially if you may pursue research, quantitative work, or grad school later.

For opportunities, Berkeley has a clear edge. Being in the Bay Area helps with internships during the school year, and the campus has a much larger concentration of student organizations tied to business, investing, consulting, public policy, and economic research. That creates more built-in ways to gain resume experience early, which is especially useful in economics since the major often depends on pairing coursework with internships, research, or strong technical skills.

For name recognition, Berkeley carries substantially more weight. Employers, grad programs, and recruiters are very familiar with Berkeley economics, and that can help open doors faster, especially for competitive internships or first-job screens. UCSC is a solid school and can absolutely work well for economics, but it does not have the same immediate signal in the field.

The main reason to choose Santa Cruz would be if you know you would thrive much more there day to day, because fit can affect grades, involvement, and well-being.
