The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus access. William & Mary is much smaller and more undergraduate-centered, which often makes it easier to build close faculty relationships and stand out for research, recommendations, and mentoring. The University of Washington offers a much larger research ecosystem with more labs, centers, and graduate-level activity, but it can take more initiative to get personal attention and navigate crowded classes, especially early on.

For graduate school prep, William & Mary has a strong reputation for serious academics and close professor involvement. That matters because strong letters of recommendation, thesis supervision, and sustained mentorship are often the hardest parts of a grad school application to build.

UW’s advantage is breadth. If your field is one where access to major research infrastructure matters, especially in STEM, public health, engineering, environmental science, or interdisciplinary work, UW can open more doors simply because the university is so large and research-active.
