Purdue is usually the better value for engineering, especially if cost is a major part of the decision. It has a larger, more established engineering ecosystem, broader recruiting across many engineering fields, and a reputation that travels very well nationally. For most families, that combination makes the return on the tuition bill easier to justify.

The biggest differentiator is the engineering program itself. Purdue’s College of Engineering is one of the school’s central strengths, with deep course offerings, major-specific resources, large-scale research, and strong employer pipelines in fields like mechanical, aerospace, electrical, civil, and industrial engineering. Santa Clara has solid engineering and the advantage of smaller classes, but its engineering footprint is not as expansive or nationally dominant.

Recruiting is another important gap. Purdue draws a very wide range of engineering employers, including major national and global firms that hire in volume, and it has a long history of sending graduates into industry, graduate school, and technical leadership tracks. Santa Clara benefits from Silicon Valley access, which is especially valuable for software, computer engineering, and certain tech-adjacent paths, but that advantage is narrower if you want the broadest engineering options.

On price, value tends to swing even more toward Purdue when Santa Clara’s higher private-school cost is not offset by substantial aid. Santa Clara can make sense financially if your net price comes down a lot through scholarships or grants, because its location and tighter undergraduate environment do have real appeal. But at similar out-of-pocket cost, Purdue usually gives more engineering depth per dollar.

Student experience matters too. Santa Clara offers smaller classes, closer faculty access, and a more intimate campus culture, which some students genuinely use well. Still, when the question is value for engineering specifically, Purdue’s scale, reputation in engineering, and employer reach usually make it the smarter investment.
