Its College of Engineering is well regarded, and the public-school price often makes the return on investment easier to justify. RPI can absolutely be worth it, but that tends to depend much more on the specific aid package.

The biggest differentiator is cost predictability. UMass Amherst, particularly for Massachusetts residents, often comes in at a substantially lower total cost than RPI. Even for out-of-state students, UMass can still be the better deal if scholarship support brings it close to or below RPI’s net price. Since both schools can lead to solid engineering outcomes, a large price gap usually tilts the value calculation toward UMass.

The second differentiator is academic reputation in engineering relative to price. RPI has a long-standing engineering identity and a more specialized tech-focused environment, which appeals to some students and can be a real advantage if you want that culture. But UMass Amherst offers credible engineering programs within a larger research university, so you are not sacrificing enough on academic quality to automatically justify paying a major premium for RPI.

The third differentiator is long-term ROI risk. Engineering graduates from both schools can do well, but taking on significantly more debt for RPI makes the payoff less certain unless the net cost is close or you strongly prefer its campus culture, size, and technical focus. In most real-world comparisons, when one option costs noticeably less and still has strong employer recognition, that school ends up being the smarter value play.
