Is UChicago or Yale better for international relations?

Yale has the clearer edge for international relations. Its Jackson School of Global Affairs gives the field a more visible institutional home, and the undergraduate pathway into IR-related study is more direct than at UChicago.

One major difference is program structure. At Yale, students interested in international relations can plug into a campus ecosystem built around global affairs through majors and coursework that connect politics, history, economics, regional study, and policy. Jackson is a real asset here because it concentrates faculty, events, practitioners, and research in one place. UChicago is excellent academically, but international relations there is less of a signature undergraduate lane and more something you build through political science, public policy, economics, history, or area studies.

Another differentiator is professional exposure. Yale tends to offer stronger day-to-day access to diplomats, policy leaders, and globally focused institutes, which matters if you want internships, policy-oriented mentoring, or a campus culture where international affairs is highly visible. UChicago absolutely places students into those worlds too, but its reputation is more centered on analytical social science and theory-heavy inquiry than on diplomacy-facing preparation.

The academic style is different as well. UChicago is outstanding for students who want a more intensely intellectual, sometimes more abstract approach to political economy, security, and comparative politics. If your version of IR leans toward rigorous theory, quantitative analysis, and deep interdisciplinary scholarship, Chicago is very compelling. Yale stands out more for someone seeking a broad, well-supported, policy-connected international relations experience at the undergraduate level.
