Purdue or UC San Diego: which school has the better college vibe?

The vibe is pretty different, and a lot depends on whether you want a classic Big Ten campus culture or a more laid-back coastal research-university feel. Purdue tends to feel more traditionally collegiate: school spirit is very visible, sports matter, and campus life is concentrated in a way that makes it easier for many students to feel part of one shared community. UC San Diego often feels more decentralized, with its college system, spread-out layout, and a social scene that is less driven by athletics and more by friend groups, clubs, and the San Diego location.

Purdue usually appeals more to students who want a strong sense of campus identity. West Lafayette is very much a college town, so a lot of student life revolves around campus itself, and that can make the environment feel more energetic and connected. The social scene is not only parties or Greek life, but there is a stronger default sense of people gathering around the same events, traditions, and routines.

UC San Diego fits students who like a calmer, more independent atmosphere. It has a reputation for being academically serious, but not in a hyper-intense, constantly performative way. Social life can take more initiative because students are split across residential colleges and many people branch out into La Jolla and the broader San Diego area, so it may feel less instantly communal than Purdue but also less socially narrow.

On collaboration versus competition, both schools are large and academically demanding, especially in STEM-heavy areas. My impression is that Purdue often feels more socially cohesive even when classes are tough, while UC San Diego can feel more self-directed: students are often friendly and collaborative, but you may need to build your own circles rather than fall into a built-in campus rhythm.
