Is University of Washington or McGill better for value in college?
I’m trying to compare these two schools based on overall value, not just prestige. I mean things like cost, reputation, and how much the degree is worth afterward.
I’m still deciding where a strong education would make the most sense financially, so I want to know which one tends to give a better return for the money.

McGill usually comes out ahead on value, especially if you are comparing total cost against academic reputation and long-term degree recognition. It is widely respected internationally, and Montreal is typically less expensive than Seattle for day-to-day living. When people talk about getting a lot of academic quality for the price, McGill is one of the schools that comes up often.
Cost is the biggest separator. University of Washington can be a very good value for Washington residents, but for out-of-state or international students it often becomes much more expensive. McGill’s tuition structure still varies by citizenship and program, but many students find the overall price significantly easier to justify, especially once housing, food, and transportation are included.
Reputation also matters for value, and both schools are strong, but in different ways. UW has an excellent reputation in the U.S., particularly in tech, engineering, computer science, public health, and research-heavy fields. McGill has a broader international brand and is often seen as one of Canada’s most recognized universities, which can make the degree travel well across countries and industries.
The career payoff depends some on where you want to work afterward. UW has an advantage if you want to build a network in Seattle or the broader U.S. job market, especially near major tech and healthcare employers. McGill can be the smarter financial choice if you want a highly respected degree without taking on as much cost, particularly if you are comfortable with Canada or internationally mobile career paths.
