Villanova vs UChicago for economics: which is better for undergrad economics?

I’m trying to decide between Villanova and UChicago and I’m interested in studying economics as an undergrad. Both schools seem strong in different ways, but I’m having trouble understanding which one is generally considered the better choice for an economics major.

I’m mostly thinking about the overall academic strength and reputation of the economics program, not a specific career path.

UChicago is the more highly regarded choice for undergraduate economics. Its economics department is one of the most influential in the field, the major is deeply integrated into the university’s intellectual identity, and the school has an unusually strong tradition in economic theory, research, and quantitative analysis.

One major difference is departmental stature. At UChicago, economics is not just a solid major but one of the university’s signature disciplines. The faculty presence, the history of major economic scholarship associated with the school, and the seriousness of the undergraduate curriculum all give it a level of academic prestige in economics that Villanova does not really match.

Another differentiator is the classroom culture around the subject. UChicago’s economics program is known for being more theoretical, analytical, and mathematically rigorous, which matters if you are judging pure academic strength. Even at the undergraduate level, students are studying in an environment where economics is treated as a central scholarly field rather than simply a practical business-adjacent major.

Villanova is a respected university with a solid economics department, and it can absolutely provide a strong undergrad education. But in a direct comparison focused specifically on the reputation and academic standing of economics, it sits a tier below UChicago.
