It is especially appealing if you are excited by theory as well as practice, want access to cutting-edge research, and like the idea of being close to the Bay Area tech ecosystem. That location matters: internships, networking, alumni connections, and exposure to major tech companies are all unusually strong there.

ASU makes more sense for a student who wants a solid CS education in a setting that may feel more accessible and less intense day to day. ASU has invested heavily in engineering and technology, offers plenty of practical opportunities, and can be a smart choice for students who expect to thrive with more flexibility or lower pressure. For some students, that environment leads to better grades, more confidence, and more time for projects, which can matter a lot in CS.

That said, when people debate these two schools specifically, Berkeley is the one more widely viewed as top-tier for CS. Its name recognition in tech is immediate, and the ceiling for research, elite recruiting, and advanced academic opportunities is higher. ASU can absolutely lead to strong outcomes, but it usually requires more self-direction to build the same level of distinction through internships, projects, and networking.
