William & Mary vs Tufts for a government major: which is stronger academically?

The biggest practical tradeoff is focus versus access: William & Mary offers a more traditional, deeply undergraduate-centered government experience with especially strong ties to political theory, American politics, and public service, while Tufts gives you broader cross-disciplinary access and a location near Boston that can create more internship and policy exposure during the school year. Academically, both are very strong for government. The difference is less about one being clearly weak or strong and more about the style of training and surrounding opportunities.

William & Mary has one of the more respected government departments among liberal arts-focused universities, and it has a long-standing reputation for serious undergraduate teaching in politics. Students often benefit from close faculty interaction, small to mid-sized upper-level classes, and a campus culture that places real weight on history, law, public policy, and public service. For someone who wants a classroom-heavy, discussion-oriented political science education with strong preparation for law school or doctoral study, William & Mary is especially compelling.

Tufts is also excellent, and one academic advantage is how naturally government connects with international relations, economics, history, and area studies there. Its political science strength is reinforced by the university’s broader policy and international affairs ecosystem, which can make the curriculum feel wider and more outward-facing. Faculty access is still strong, but the academic experience can feel a bit more interdisciplinary and globally oriented than William & Mary’s.

For pure undergraduate academic experience in government, I would give William & Mary a slight edge. Its department has an especially strong reputation for undergraduate focus, rigorous coursework, and producing students who are well prepared for law, policy, and graduate study. Tufts may be more appealing if you want the government major embedded in a more international, policy-connected environment, but if the question is which school feels strongest academically in government itself, William & Mary comes out a little ahead.
