A concrete difference is the academic profile Columbia typically expects. Admitted students are usually near the very top of their class and have taken the most demanding courses available, and even that is only the baseline for serious consideration. At Howard, strong academics still matter a lot, but the level of competition is not as compressed at the absolute highest end in the way it is at Columbia.
