Is Florida or Washington better for city life as a college student?

Washington is the better choice for city life as a college student. Seattle offers a much more cohesive urban college experience than most Florida cities, with stronger public transit, denser walkable neighborhoods, and universities that are more integrated into the city rather than separated from it.

The biggest difference is transit and walkability. In Washington, Seattle has light rail, buses, commuter rail, and neighborhoods where students can realistically get around without a car. In Florida, even major metro areas like Miami, Orlando, and Tampa tend to be more car-dependent overall, and student life often feels more spread out.

The city itself also matters. Seattle has a clearer urban core with dense neighborhoods, coffee shops, music venues, bookstores, parks, internships, and everyday off-campus life all packed closer together. Florida absolutely has exciting cities, especially Miami, but many college options in the state are either suburban, isolated, or not deeply tied into the most walkable parts of the city. That makes it harder to get the constant, everyday city feeling you seem to be looking for.

Washington also tends to give you a more straightforward version of urban student life across fewer but more city-connected options. Florida has more variation, and if you land at a school in or near downtown Miami you can get pieces of that experience, but statewide it is less consistent.
