Is the University of Florida or NYU better for a finance career?
I’m trying to decide between the University of Florida and NYU and my main goal is to build a career in finance after college.
I know both schools are well known in different ways, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one tends to give students a better path into finance jobs and recruiting.

For a finance career, NYU usually offers the more direct path, especially if you are aiming for investment banking, asset management, private equity, hedge funds, or other roles that recruit heavily in New York. UF can still lead to strong finance outcomes, but the path is usually less automatic and often depends more on how actively you network, build experience, and target specific regional markets.
NYU fits the student who wants to be surrounded by finance from day one and is comfortable with a fast, career-driven environment. You would have much easier access to alumni events, informational interviews, in-semester internships, and recruiting touchpoints simply because so many firms and graduates are nearby. That proximity matters in finance, where timing, networking, and repeated exposure to employers can make a real difference.
UF makes a lot of sense for the student who wants a more traditional campus experience, lower cost, and a strong business education without betting everything on one industry ecosystem. If you are disciplined, proactive, and possibly interested in finance roles in Florida, the Southeast, corporate finance, commercial banking, real estate, or wealth management, UF can be an excellent launch point. It has a respected business school and a large alumni base, but you may need to work harder to break into the most New York-centric parts of high finance.
Cost should matter a lot in this comparison. In finance, taking on much less debt at UF can be a real advantage, especially if your interests might shift away from the highest-paying Wall Street roles. But if NYU is affordable for your family and your target is specifically top-tier finance recruiting, it has a clear edge because of brand strength in finance and access to the industry during the school year.
So the answer depends less on which school is “better” in the abstract and more on how specifically finance-focused you are. For a student locked in on Wall Street-style recruiting and ready to use the city constantly, NYU stands out. For a student who wants strong options at a lower price and is willing to create momentum through effort, UF is a very credible route.
