Is Florida or Maryland better for internships for college students?

Maryland has the edge for internships for most college students because of its access to the Washington, DC job market and the sheer concentration of government, policy, research, healthcare, and consulting employers nearby. Students in Maryland can often reach internships during the semester by commuter rail, Metro, or short drives, which matters a lot more than just having summer options. That proximity makes it easier to build experience earlier and keep interning while classes are in session.

A big differentiator is employer density tied to DC and the federal ecosystem. In Maryland, students are close to agencies, contractors, think tanks, nonprofits, biotech firms, hospitals, and major research institutions. That creates a wider mix of internship types, especially for political science, international relations, public health, computer science, engineering, business, and life sciences.

Another difference is how practical semester internships are. At many Maryland colleges, students can realistically work part-time in DC, Bethesda, Rockville, Baltimore, or nearby research corridors without needing to relocate for the summer. In Florida, there are certainly strong pockets like Miami, Orlando, Tampa, and Jacksonville, but internship access is more spread out by region, so opportunities can depend heavily on which campus you attend and whether you have a car.

Industry mix also matters. Florida is strong for hospitality, tourism, real estate, healthcare, aerospace, logistics, and some finance and tech, so it can be excellent if those are your target fields. Maryland is usually more advantageous for students who want internships connected to government, defense, cybersecurity, biotech, public policy, journalism, medicine, or research.

One place Florida can compete well is if you attend a school with deep local employer ties in a major metro or in a specialized field like aerospace near the Space Coast. But on the broad question of employer access while you are still in school, Maryland offers a more consistently useful internship environment.
