Which is better for computer science: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or McGill University?

For computer science specifically, UIUC usually has the edge. Its CS program is one of the most established and visible in the U.S., it has deep recruiting pipelines into major tech companies, and being in the U.S. makes internships and full-time hiring much more straightforward if you want to start your career in American tech. McGill is also a respected university with a solid CS department, but the outcome can look different depending on where you want to live and work after graduation.

UIUC fits the student who wants a very CS-centered environment with lots of peers aiming for software engineering, systems, AI, research, and high-volume tech recruiting. The department is large, well known among employers, and tied into a strong engineering ecosystem, so there is a lot of course depth and a strong campus culture around computing. For someone who wants maximum brand recognition in U.S. tech circles, UIUC carries exceptional weight.

It also suits the student who wants the most direct internship path into U.S. companies during college. Recruiters know the school well, career fairs are a major asset, and alumni presence in tech is extensive.

McGill makes more sense for the student who wants a globally respected university in Montreal, is interested in Canada as a long-term destination, or values a somewhat broader academic and urban experience alongside CS. Montreal has a real tech scene, especially in AI and software, and McGill’s name travels well internationally. If you may want to build your career in Canada, McGill becomes much more compelling because local networking, internships, and post-grad work options line up better.

On pure CS reputation and U.S. tech placement, I would lean UIUC. On international reputation plus a Canadian pathway, McGill is a very strong option, but for a student mainly optimizing for computer science strength, internships, and jobs in tech after college, UIUC is the stronger bet.
