Is McGill or Duke better for med school admissions?

The biggest practical tradeoff is prestige versus grading environment: Duke likely gives you easier access to U.S. premed advising, hospitals, and a more med school-oriented ecosystem, while McGill can be tougher on GPA because of large classes and a more demanding grading culture in many science courses. For medical school admissions, that GPA difference matters a lot more than name recognition alone. Both schools are respected, but neither gets you into med school just by being on the diploma.

Duke has a clearer built-in advantage if your goal is U.S. medical schools. It is deeply connected to a major academic medical center, offers strong undergraduate research access, and has a campus culture where many students are actively navigating the premed path.

McGill is also an excellent university and absolutely can lead to medical school, but the path can be less straightforward, especially if you are aiming for U.S. MD programs. Some U.S. medical schools are less accessible to international applicants, and if you are not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, that issue matters far more than whether McGill or Duke is more prestigious. Even for Canadian applicants, McGill’s grading and course rigor can make it harder to protect the very high GPA that med schools want.

Another factor is where you want to practice. If you want Canadian medical schools, McGill may make more logistical sense, especially if residency status or provincial ties help you. If you want U.S. medical schools, Duke is the cleaner option because the advising, extracurricular infrastructure, and institutional context line up more directly with that process.

So in terms of actual med school admissions advantage, Duke has the edge for most students, especially for U.S. med schools. McGill is the better pick only in narrower cases, mainly when cost is much lower or your medical school plans are centered in Canada and you are confident you can excel academically there.
