Is McGill or Georgetown worth it for finance careers?
I’m trying to decide between McGill and Georgetown and I want to study finance or something close to it. Both seem strong in different ways, but I’m not sure which one is actually worth it if my goal is getting into finance after college.
I’m looking at this more from a career outcome and value perspective than just prestige.

The biggest practical tradeoff is U.S. finance access versus lower cost and international value. Georgetown gives you a much cleaner path into U.S. finance recruiting because of its Washington location, alumni network, and stronger brand recognition with American employers. McGill is often the better value financially, especially if the price gap is large, and it has an excellent reputation, but its pipeline is stronger in Canada than on Wall Street.
For finance careers specifically, Georgetown usually has the edge if your target is U.S. investment banking, private equity later on, or major East Coast finance recruiting. Employers in the U.S. know Georgetown well, and students benefit from alumni ties in Washington, New York, and other major markets. Even though Georgetown is not in New York, it is very plugged into high-level recruiting and professional internships.
McGill can absolutely lead to strong finance outcomes, especially for roles in Montreal, Toronto, and other Canadian markets. It also carries real international prestige and can be a smart pick if you may want flexibility outside the U.S. But if you want to work in the United States right after graduation, McGill makes the process less straightforward because networking, recruiting access, and work authorization can all be more complicated.
From a value perspective, cost matters a lot in finance because many entry-level paths, even strong ones, do not instantly justify massive debt. If McGill is dramatically cheaper, that can outweigh Georgetown’s networking advantage. If costs are close and your goal is clearly U.S. finance, Georgetown is the one I’d lean toward.
