McGill vs Tufts for international relations: which is better for an IR major?

Tufts has the edge for international relations. Its IR ecosystem is unusually strong because undergraduates are tied closely to the Fletcher School, one of the best-known graduate schools of international affairs, and the university has a long-standing reputation in diplomacy, global policy, and language study. For someone prioritizing program strength and preparation for careers or grad school in international affairs, that connection matters a lot.

One major differentiator is the academic structure. At Tufts, international relations is a signature area, with a dedicated undergraduate major that is interdisciplinary by design and supported by faculty whose work is directly tied to global politics, security, development, and diplomacy. The Fletcher connection also means more IR-focused events, speakers, and a campus culture where international affairs is central rather than just one strong option among many.

A second difference is career positioning. Tufts benefits from being near Boston and relatively close to the broader Northeast policy and nonprofit corridor, and its alumni network in foreign policy, NGOs, and international organizations is especially visible. For grad school, Fletcher’s presence can help undergrads understand the field early and build relevant mentoring relationships. That does not guarantee outcomes, but it creates a clearer pipeline into IR-adjacent work.

McGill is still excellent, especially if you want an internationally diverse student body and a globally oriented education in Montreal. It offers strong political science and area studies options, and Montreal is a very international city. But for IR specifically, McGill feels less singularly centered on that field than Tufts does.

Cost and location could still affect the decision, but on the narrow question of which school is stronger for an IR major with an eye toward international affairs careers or graduate study, Tufts is the more compelling choice.
