Is McGill or Columbia better for breaking into finance careers?

I'm a high school senior trying to decide where to apply, and both schools keep coming up for finance. I know Columbia is in New York and McGill is well known too, but I'm trying to understand which one has the stronger path into investment banking, sales and trading, or other finance jobs after graduation.

I'm mainly looking at the overall recruiting advantage and how much the school name matters for finance.

The biggest practical tradeoff is direct access to New York finance recruiting versus a much lower-cost, internationally respected university experience. For breaking into investment banking, sales and trading, and similar front-office roles in the U.S., Columbia has the clearer edge because it sits in Manhattan, is deeply plugged into Wall Street recruiting, and has a very strong alumni presence in major banks and buy-side firms. McGill has a solid reputation and does place students into finance, especially in Canada, but its path into top U.S. finance jobs is less automatic and usually takes more extra networking.

If your target is U.S. investment banking or sales and trading right after undergrad, Columbia is the stronger option. The school name carries a lot of weight in finance, and proximity matters more than many applicants realize because it helps with coffee chats, in-semester internships, alumni events, and visibility with recruiters. Columbia students are simply closer to the firms, the interview pipeline, and the alumni who can help open doors.

McGill is still a real contender, especially for Toronto, Montreal, and some cross-border outcomes. It is well regarded by employers, and strong McGill students can absolutely land finance roles, but the process is more self-directed if you are aiming for New York. You would likely need to be more deliberate about networking, travel, timing, and recruiting logistics, and visa/work authorization questions can matter depending on your citizenship.

For overall recruiting advantage and pure school-name leverage in finance, Columbia wins. McGill becomes especially appealing when cost is dramatically lower, when you may want to build a career in Canada, or when you value the broader international environment enough to accept a steeper climb into U.S. front-office finance.
