Is Purdue or the University of Michigan easier to get into?

The University of Michigan is harder to get into than Purdue in overall admissions. Michigan is widely viewed as the more selective school, especially for out-of-state applicants, and it tends to draw a very large pool of high-achieving students from across the country and internationally. Purdue is also competitive, particularly in high-demand majors like engineering, computer science, and business, but overall it is not usually as difficult to enter as Michigan.

One important difference is how much residency matters. Michigan gives a clear advantage to in-state applicants, so admission can be especially tough if you are applying from outside Michigan. Purdue also considers residency, but the gap in perceived difficulty is usually not as stark as it is at Michigan.

Another key factor is the major you are applying for. At Purdue, selectivity can jump quite a bit for programs such as First-Year Engineering, CS, and other capped majors, so in some specific cases Purdue can feel just as hard or harder than Michigan depending on the program. Michigan also has very competitive colleges and programs, but as a general school-level comparison, Michigan is still the tougher admit.
