Purdue or Harvard for STEM prestige: which is more respected by employers and grad schools?

Harvard carries more weight overall with employers and grad schools, but Purdue has unusually strong name recognition in specific STEM fields, especially engineering. In most settings, Harvard’s brand is broader and more instantly legible across industries, research spaces, and international contexts. Purdue, though, is deeply respected in engineering, aerospace, and some applied technical areas where people know exactly how rigorous its programs are.

Purdue has a long-standing, very concrete reputation in engineering and related STEM disciplines, and in some hiring circles that can be just as impressive, or even more directly relevant, than Harvard.

For grad school, the edge usually comes less from prestige alone and more from research access, faculty relationships, and the strength of your record in your discipline. Harvard’s name helps, but strong letters, research output, and advanced coursework matter more than a broad brand once you are applying seriously in STEM. Purdue can position students extremely well for graduate study if they take advantage of research and do well in a demanding department.

So if the question is pure respect, Harvard has the stronger all-purpose signal. If the question is how knowledgeable STEM people, especially engineers, view the schools, Purdue is absolutely not seen as second-tier and can be exceptionally respected in the exact areas it is known for.
