Is William & Mary or the University of South Carolina more fun for college life?

The biggest day-to-day tradeoff is this: William & Mary tends to offer a smaller, more close-knit, campus-centered social scene, while the University of South Carolina has a bigger, louder, more traditional college atmosphere. South Carolina has SEC sports, a larger student body, and more visible school-spirit energy on weekends. William & Mary has a historic campus, a tighter community, and a social life that often feels more driven by clubs, friend groups, and campus events than by big spectator sports.

If by “fun” you mean packed football Saturdays, lots of people around, easier access to Greek life and bar/restaurant scenes, and a stronger sense of constant buzz, South Carolina will probably feel more entertaining day to day. Columbia gives students more off-campus options, and the scale of the university creates more variety in what’s happening at any given time.

William & Mary can still be very enjoyable, but the fun there is usually less flashy. Students often talk about traditions, organization involvement, themed events, and a campus culture where people know each other well. Williamsburg is charming, but it is quieter than Columbia, so weekend life can feel more self-created and less built around a huge surrounding scene.

In terms of whether students seem happy and involved, both schools have active students, just in different ways. South Carolina often projects more visible energy. William & Mary often feels more intimate and intellectually engaged, with involvement happening through smaller communities rather than large-scale spectacle.
