Should I choose Michigan State or Ohio State for college?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Ohio State tends to offer more overall scale, name recognition, and major-by-major opportunities, while Michigan State can feel a bit more navigable and personal within the large public university category. Both are classic Big Ten campuses with strong school spirit, broad academic options, major research activity, and lots of student life, so the real decision usually comes down to which environment feels easier to build a life in for four years.

Academically, the most useful comparison is not the university as a whole but your likely major, backup major, and how easy it is to access those programs. Look at whether your intended department is especially well resourced, whether admission to the major is direct or competitive after enrollment, and how early undergrads can get advising, research, internships, or faculty contact. At schools this large, two students can have very different experiences depending on program structure.

Campus feel matters more here than people expect. Ohio State, in Columbus, has the advantage of being in a major city with a huge alumni base and a lot happening right off campus. Michigan State, in East Lansing, still has a lively college-town setting, but many students find it more contained and less overwhelming day to day. That difference affects internships during the school year, transportation, social life, and how independent you want your surroundings to feel.

Also compare cost in the most boring, concrete way possible: total annual cost after scholarships, travel, housing, and what you would actually need to borrow. For two similar large public schools, graduating with less debt is often the detail that matters most later.

If Michigan State is notably cheaper, feels more comfortable when you visit, or is stronger for your specific program, that is more than enough reason to choose it instead.
