Florida State vs Temple for city life: which one offers a more urban college experience?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Temple is embedded in a major city in a way Florida State is not, while Florida State gives you a more traditional campus in a capital city that feels smaller and more college-centered day to day. Temple is in North Philadelphia with direct access to the broader Philadelphia transit system, neighborhoods, restaurants, museums, sports, and internships. Florida State is in Tallahassee, which is a real city and the state capital, but it functions much more like a government and college town than a dense urban environment.

If your priority is an undergraduate experience where the city is constantly part of daily life, Temple is the clearer match. You can step off campus and be in an urban grid with public transportation, city blocks, rowhouses, businesses, and access to Center City. That means internships, concerts, food spots, and off-campus exploration are more naturally built into ordinary student life rather than something you plan around occasionally.

Florida State does have city advantages, just of a different kind. Tallahassee offers state government internships, local restaurants, music, and enough off-campus activity that you will not feel isolated. But the atmosphere around FSU is much more defined by the university itself, and getting the full city experience is less seamless than at Temple. It feels more like a college campus located in a city than a campus woven into one of the country’s major urban environments.

One important note is that “urban” at Temple also comes with the realities of city living, including greater variability in neighborhood feel and the need to be more aware of safety and surroundings off campus. Some students love that energy and independence; others find it less comfortable than a contained campus setting.

For pure city life, Temple stands out. Florida State can absolutely give you things to do off campus, but Temple is the one that feels city-centered in the way you’re describing.
