Is Indiana University or UIUC better for finance majors?

I’m a high school senior trying to decide between Indiana University and UIUC, and finance is the major I’m most interested in. I know both schools have strong reputations, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one is generally considered better for someone who wants to study finance and possibly recruit for finance jobs after college.

I’m mainly trying to understand how they compare for finance as a major and career placement.

For finance specifically, Indiana University is usually the more established name. Kelley has a long-standing reputation in undergraduate business, a very deep alumni network in finance, and a recruiting pipeline that is especially visible for investment banking, corporate finance, and related business roles. UIUC is excellent overall and highly respected, but its strongest national pull is often more tied to accounting, engineering, tech-adjacent business paths, and quantitative fields than to undergraduate finance in the same way Kelley is.

Indiana tends to fit the student who wants a very business-centered college experience from the start. Kelley is large, well-known among employers, and built around undergraduate business education in a way that makes finance feel like a central pathway rather than one strong option among many. If you picture yourself joining finance clubs early, networking constantly, and aiming at structured recruiting pipelines, IU often gives more of that classic pre-professional business environment.

UIUC makes more sense for a student who wants finance within a broader, more technical university setting. Gies is a respected business school, and UIUC can be especially appealing if your interests might overlap with data, economics, accounting, or tech. A student who likes the idea of keeping one foot in finance and another in a more quantitative or interdisciplinary direction may find UIUC more attractive.

For career placement, IU usually has the clearer edge if your target is traditional finance recruiting. Kelley’s alumni presence and employer familiarity in finance are a real advantage, especially for students who are proactive. UIUC can absolutely get students to strong outcomes too, but compared head-to-head for undergraduate finance branding and finance-focused recruiting culture, Indiana is more often the school people point to first.

If cost is similar and you are fairly sure finance is your lane, Indiana would likely give you the more direct platform. If UIUC is significantly cheaper or you want a more technical campus environment with flexibility beyond finance, that can outweigh the difference.
