UNC Charlotte vs Florida Atlantic for value: which is the better college if I care about return on investment?

I’m trying to decide between UNC Charlotte and Florida Atlantic and keep hearing people talk about “value” and ROI. I’m mostly thinking about whether the degree is worth the cost in the long run, especially if I want a solid job after graduation without taking on too much debt.

I know both schools are more affordable than a lot of private colleges, but I’m having trouble comparing them in a meaningful way.

UNC Charlotte has the edge for return on investment for most students, especially if your goal is to turn a reasonably priced degree into strong job access after graduation. Its biggest advantage is location: Charlotte is one of the Southeast’s strongest banking, finance, tech, logistics, and energy job markets, and the university is tightly connected to that economy through internships, recruiting, and employer partnerships. That matters a lot for ROI because the best value often comes from how easily a school helps you land paid experience before graduation.

Another differentiator is program strength in fields that feed directly into employment. UNC Charlotte is especially well known for business, engineering, computer science, data-related fields, and urban-oriented professional programs, and those areas line up well with employers in the Charlotte metro. When a university has clear pipelines into nearby industries, students often have an easier time building experience that leads to full-time offers.

Florida Atlantic can still be a very solid value, particularly for students who get in-state tuition in Florida or who want to work in South Florida after college. Its location helps with healthcare, hospitality, business, marine and environmental areas, and regional networking, but the employer ecosystem tied to UNC Charlotte tends to be broader and especially strong for students targeting mainstream corporate roles.

Debt should still shape the final decision. If FAU would cost you meaningfully less than UNC Charlotte after scholarships, that could outweigh UNC Charlotte’s career advantage, because lower borrowing can improve ROI fast. But if costs are fairly close, UNC Charlotte is the more compelling pick on value because of its stronger connection to a major employment market and the clearer career pipeline that comes with it.
