Is UIUC or Duke more prestigious for computer science?
I’m trying to decide between the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Duke for computer science, and I keep seeing both schools mentioned as strong options.
I mostly want to understand which name carries more weight specifically for CS, since I know overall school reputation and major reputation can be different.

The biggest practical tradeoff is department reputation versus overall university brand. For computer science specifically, UIUC has the stronger and more established reputation. Duke is an excellent university with a powerful overall name, but in CS circles it is usually not viewed at the same level of specialization or historical prominence as UIUC.
If the question is narrowly “which carries more weight for computer science,” UIUC is the clearer answer.
Duke’s name can carry broader prestige outside of CS because it has a more elite overall brand in the general public. In some non-technical settings, someone may react more strongly to “Duke” than “UIUC.” But once the audience is tech-focused, the balance shifts, and UIUC often has more credibility for computer science itself.
So on the prestige question for computer science, UIUC carries more weight. Duke has the flashier all-around university name, but if you want the school whose reputation is strongest specifically in CS, Illinois is the one people tend to put ahead.
